Breaking Stereotypes: Thriving as a Male Cosmetology Student at Crave Beauty Academy

Crave Beauty Academy student

In an industry often stereotyped as female-dominated, male cosmetology students like Alenten Wilson are breaking barriers and redefining norms. At Crave Beauty Academy, Alenten has embraced the challenges, celebrated the victories, and found a community that supports his vision of excellence. This blog highlights his journey through our cosmetology program, offering insights and advice for others considering a beauty education.

What first sparked your interest in cosmetology, and how did you decide to pursue it as a career?

Alenten’s fascination with hair started early, through family influence. He attended barber school in 2017 and brings seven years of experience to Crave, including two years owning Levels Foundation. He came to cosmetology school “about becoming more well-rounded in the industry and providing better care for my clients,” reflecting his commitment to continuous professional growth.

What attracted you specifically to Crave Beauty Academy?

Alenten shares, “Crave felt like home.” While his wife’s employment there created an initial connection, he credits staff members Ms. McIntosh, Ms. Orth, Ms. Schooley, and Mrs. Holtz with making it the right choice through their welcoming approach.

Can you share one or two memorable experiences you’ve had so far at Crave?

Two standout moments stand out: speaking at graduation (“I was extremely nervous, but I pushed through, and it turned out to be a proud moment”) and the moments of student confusion. He notes, “Many thought I was an educator because I’m a male and already have a successful business. It was a funny yet humbling experience.”

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a male cosmetology student, and how have you overcome them?

Alenten points to “juggling 100+ women’s emotions in a day while maintaining professionalism” as a real challenge. His solution is clear communication and staying grounded in his purpose. His advice: “It’s all about knowing yourself and not letting stereotypes define you.”

What would you say to other men considering a career in cosmetology who might feel hesitant due to stereotypes?

He encourages prospective students, noting that “every career has stereotypes,” and advises them to focus on their own goals rather than others’ judgments. His advice: “Don’t let fear of judgment hold you back. This industry thrives on diversity and individuality.”

How has the cosmetology community, both at Crave and beyond, supported you in your journey?

Alenten points to community support through encouragement and shared wisdom. He practices active listening in every interaction, treating each conversation as a chance to gain a new perspective.

What areas of cosmetology do you enjoy the most, and why?

Hair remains his primary passion, “it’s comforting and familiar,” but cosmetology school has expanded his interests to include skin and nails, which he finds creatively and technically fulfilling.

Who are some of your biggest role models or inspirations in the beauty industry?

His five uncles, all barbers, first inspired him through their craft. He singles out his uncle Jerry Wyatt (JP), who has owned Barber Masters on 9th and Oliver for years and has instructed at multiple barber schools, saying his “dedication and expertise have always motivated me.”

In what ways do you think male cosmetologists bring a unique perspective to the industry?

Alenten believes men offer a distinct viewpoint on client preferences. He says this perspective “enriches the industry, providing insights into styles and preferences from a different angle,” and contributes “a balance that enhances creativity and client satisfaction.”

What advice would you give to other male students just starting out in beauty school?

His guidance centers on resilience: “When the going gets tough, get tougher.” He stresses understanding your goals, pursuing them consistently, and remembering that “progress takes time, but consistency and resilience will see you through.”

What are your goals after graduation, and how do you envision your future in the beauty industry?

Alenten is optimistic: “The future is bright.” His plans include expanding his knowledge for current and future clients, growing his business, staying current with industry trends, and keeping his focus on exceptional client care.

Is there anything you’d like people to know about the inclusivity and diversity within the beauty industry?

He puts it simply: “The beauty industry is for everyone.” He points to the opportunities available across the field and calls out Crave as an example, noting the school’s “diversity and openness create an environment where everyone can thrive.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Beauty Professionals

Alenten’s journey is a story of resilience and barrier-breaking, and a reminder that the beauty industry runs on diversity and individuality. In his words: “Embrace who you are, stay focused, and don’t let stereotypes define you. The world is your business, and the opportunities are endless.”
