How to Clean Your Beauty Supplies

With all their daily use, it’s no secret that we all should be taking time to clean our beauty supplies. The last thing you need right now is to apply makeup on your face that’s not hygenic. But how can you be sure that your beauty cleaning routine is enough? Don’t worry because we’ve got you covered! Check out our ultimate guide to give your beauty supplies the spring cleaning treatment.

What to Toss Out

First things first, it’s time to toss out your favorite supplies that have gone way past its expiration date. If some of you are surprised that beauty products even have an expiration date, then this step is long overdue. With your arsenal of beauty tools, it may seem overwhelming to figure out when you should throw everything away. Just your makeup has a lot of guidelines depending on ingredients and other factors. We lay it all out for you below!

Makeup

As we said, makeup will have different expiration dates depending on the type and what ingredients are in it. For example, pencil and powder makeup will have a much longer shelf life than liquid-based ones. Compared to liquid’s expected six to twelve-month lifespan, both powder and pencil makeup products can be used for up to two years. Just make sure that you sharpen your pencil makeup so you’re not constantly using the same point.

For your ingredients, keep in mind that if you’re someone who prefers a natural route, those makeup products will expire faster. Having preservative-free makeup is a great alternative if you have sensitive skin but that does shorten storage time.

Skin Care

Like makeup, skin care products’ shelf life depends on the ingredients. The main thing to remember with skin care is to go when you’ve opened the products. However, some products may even differ based on how it’s stored. Moisturizer in a tube can last up to a year compared to six months if it’s kept in a jar. At the very least, make sure to smell and check your products’ texture to use your best judgement.

Wondering how you can best store your makeup and skin care products to make them last? Here are some pro tips!

  • Wash your hands before using products.
  • Tighten the cap or lid after each use.
  • Store products in a cabinet or drawer.
  • Don’t add water to add moisture to products.
  • Don’t store products in the sun.
  • Try not to share your makeup and skin care products, especially those you apply on your eyes or mouth.

Cleaning What Remains

Now you’re ready to give the beauty supplies that remain a real cleaning! We’re just going to assume that it’s been awhile since the last time you gave them a good scrub. Well, there’s no better time to get them sanitized, especially the beauty supplies that come in contact with your eyes. Here are some tips for your beauty cleaning you should do but probably don’t:

  • Rinse your brushes in lukewarm water and scrub your brushes with a drop of soap.
  • Throw away old makeup brushes after around 2-3 months.
  • Use sanitizing sprays for your bronzer, powder eyeshadow, and more.
  • Wash metal tools like eyelash curlers and tweezers with soap and water.
  • Unplug and wipe down heat-styling tools with a cotton ball that’s been soaked in rubbing alcohol.
  • Remember to sanitize your makeup bag where everything is stored. An antibacterial wipe should be all you need.
