1. Passion for Beauty

Passion goes a long way in almost any industry and beauty is no exception. If you are passionate about what you are doing, you will make time for it! Passion and time are then markers for success.

Passion for your craft can help you succeed in any career you choose. When you have a deep love and interest in what you do, your work will be far more meaningful and enjoyable. As a cosmetologist, you should have a passion for beauty and enjoy making others look and feel their best.

If you’re passionate about hair, makeup, and beauty in general, cosmetology might be a good fit for you. The great news is that if you enjoy one or two of these aspects more than another, you can specialize in it. Not all cosmetologists are just hairstylists. • Makeup Artist
  • Style Consultant

2. Creativity

Creativity is key in the beauty industry. There are a lot of people who may not think of cosmetology as an art, but it is. While trends come and go, there are always creative minds finding ways to make older styles new again.

Cosmetologists can channel this creativity into their work by helping their clients find ways to express themselves. A good hairstylist can envision and advise what cut, style, and color would go well with the other physical features of their clients.

A good cosmetologist can bring their vision (or more importantly, the client’s vision) to life! Once they have an idea in their mind about what look they want to create, they use a variety of techniques to make it a reality. It can be a very creative process and those who have creative minds have the potential to thrive as a cosmetologist.

This is why attending a great cosmetology program is so essential. Our instructors help students learn ways to nurture their creative side by mastering techniques they can use in their future careers.

3. Persistence

Establishing yourself in your career takes some persistence, especially at the beginning.  But, when you do what you love, the journey can be as rewarding as the end result – a career you are excited to go to each day. It takes time to find loyal clients, and there will be many long days of work. But with a “can do” attitude, you can build an amazing career in cosmetology.

In the states of Kansas and Missouri, cosmetology students must complete 1,500 hours of training before they can take the test to potentially become licensed cosmetologists! We are here to help you every step of the way as you make the journey!

4. Good Listening and Communication

Being a good listener can make you stand out in a client’s mind as a great hairstylist. Try to connect with your clients by listening to their ideas and chatting with them through the appointment.A lot of clients like it when their hairstylist responds to them and makes fun conversation. You will also need to talk through the process to make sure you both have the same vision for the style they want.

Communication is also important with potential co-workers and employers. Good communication skills can help you set yourself apart as a very professional cosmetologist.

Although cosmetology is  a creative industry, professional business skills can be incredibly important. According to Data USA, cosmetologists also need to develop key business skills to succeed. These include:

  • critical thinking
  • service orientation
  • time management.

These are essential, especially if you choose to open your own salon or operate as a freelancer.

6. Industry Knowledge

The beauty industry changes much more than many other industries. There is always a new fashion trend or style popping up. What people like today could change overnight and they may want a totally different look tomorrow.

For a cosmetologist, this means that you may want to be up to date who is currently influencing beauty and style. Staying up to date on the hottest trends can be a big part of cosmetology. It may then help you to learn how to provide the latest styles to your clients.

As a cosmetologist, you could be learning new things constantly. You must be open-minded and willing to learn and try new things to give your clients the results they want.
