Top Traits of a Great Cosmetologist

It’s no secret that some personalities thrive in specific careers. And while there are no set rules for personality traits you must possess to work in cosmetology, there are lots of ingredients that go into making someone a great cosmetologist.

If you’ve dreamed of working in the beauty industry, you may have wondered to yourself: what does it take to be a cosmetologist? Could it be a good career for me?

With over 25 years of experience in the industry, and having watched countless numbers of graduates go on to have successful and fulfilling careers, we have a pretty good idea of the top traits that make a great cosmetologist. Keep reading for our list of characteristics that all good cosmetologists should have if they want to thrive in this industry!

1. Passion for Beauty

Any time you choose something to dedicate your time to, the level of passion you have for it will influence your success.

Passion for your craft can help you succeed in any career you choose. When you have a deep love and interest in what you do, your work will be far more meaningful and enjoyable. As a cosmetologist, you should have a passion for beauty and enjoy making others look and feel their best.

If you’re passionate about hair, makeup, and beauty in general, cosmetology might be a good fit for you. The great news is that if you enjoy one or two of these aspects more than another, you can specialize in it. Not all cosmetologists are solely hairstylists. You can also become a makeup artist or style consultant, or even an educator to teach others the latest techniques and trends.

2. Creativity

Creativity is key in the beauty industry. There are a lot of people who may not think of cosmetology as an art, but it is. While trends come and go, there are always creative minds finding ways to make older styles new again.

Cosmetologists can channel this creativity into their work by helping their clients find ways to express themselves. A good hairstylist envisions what cut, style, and color would go well with the other physical features of their clients.

A good cosmetologist can bring their vision (or more importantly, the client’s vision) to life! Once they have an idea in their mind about what look they want to create, they use a variety of techniques to make it a reality. It can be a very creative process and those who have creative minds have the potential to thrive as a cosmetologist.

This is why attending a great cosmetology program is so essential. Here at Crave Beauty Academy, our instructors help students learn ways to nurture their creative side by mastering techniques they will use in their future careers.

3. Hard Work

Being a cosmetologist can be hard work at times. Getting through cosmetology school and pursuing a career in cosmetology requires dedication and determination. In Kansas, cosmetology students must complete 1,500 hours of training before they can take the test to become licensed cosmetologists!

Establishing yourself in your career takes some hard work but when you do what you love the journey can be as rewarding as the end result – a career you are excited to go to each day. It takes time to find loyal clients, and there will be many long days of work. But with a “can do” attitude, you can build an amazing career in cosmetology.

4. Good Listening and Communication

Being a good listener can make you stand out in a client’s mind as a great hairstylist. Being able to connect with your clients by listening to their ideas and chatting with them through the appointment is very important. Another part of being a successful cosmetologist is being a good communicator.

A lot of clients like it when their hairstylist responds to them and makes fun conversation. You will also need to talk through the process to make sure you both have the same vision for the style they want.

Communication is also important with co-workers and employers. Good communication skills can help you set yourself apart as a very professional cosmetologist.

5. Professional Skills

Although cosmetology is certainly a creative industry, professional business skills are incredibly important. According to Data USA, cosmetologists also need to develop key business skills to succeed, including critical thinking, service orientation, and time management. These are essential, especially if you choose to open your own salon or operate as a freelancer.

Learning how to communicate as a professional and understanding these business skills can get you a lot further in your career. That’s why our instructors at Crave Beauty provide business and marketing training to all students. We will help you brush up on these professional traits to help you thrive in any job you decide to pursue.

6. Industry Knowledge

The beauty industry changes much more than many other industries. There is always a new fashion trend or style popping up. What people like today could change overnight and they may want a totally different look tomorrow.

For a cosmetologist, this means that you will have to be up to date on what is happening and who’s currently influencing beauty and style. Staying up to date on the hottest trends is a big part of cosmetology – and you also need to learn how to provide the latest styles to your clients.

As a cosmetologist, you will be learning new things constantly. You must be open-minded and willing to learn and try new things to give your clients the results they want.
