Cosmetology vs Esthetics: What’s the Difference?

Women in beauty

There are many things to love about the beauty industry, but one of the best things is that there are plenty of different opportunities available. If you’ve been considering beauty school, then you’ve probably heard about cosmetology and esthetics! While both of these programs offer great opportunities, they are both very different.

Cosmetologists and estheticians are similar, but often get confused. We’re going to talk about the differences between the two, and hopefully this will help you decide which program is right for you!

What Is Cosmetology?

Cosmetology is the beautification of the hair, skin and nails. A cosmetologist has knowledge in a wide range of skills and can perform many services. These services can range from haircuts to facials to manicures.

About Our Cosmetology Program

At Crave Beauty Academy, we offer a 1500 hour cosmetology program. Our cosmetology program is broken down into four phases of instruction: core training, experience, create, and salon life. Along with learning all the latest cosmetology techniques, students also have the opportunity to learn business and marketing strategies that are specific to the program! Here are a list of skills you can expect to learn:

  • Hair Cutting
  • Hair Design
  • Texturing
  • American Crew men’s haircutting system
  • Business and marketing
  • Makeup
  • Skincare
  • Nails
  • And much more!

What Is Esthetics?

Esthetics is the science of skincare. As an esthetician, you’ll be able to provide skincare services and bring out the beauty in your clients skin! This involves many treatments and could be in the form of cleansing, makeup, waxing, and more! Estheticians can help with acne, other skin issues, and educate people on how to create a good skincare routine.

About Our Esthetics Program

Our Esthetics program offers professional training in a variety of standard aspects of the esthetics industry! The training program in Wichita, KS is 1000 hours and 750 hours in Ballwin, MO. You can learn a variety of these skills:

  • Skin analysis
  • Knowledge in skin disorders and conditions
  • Skin anatomy and physiology
  • Facial treatments
  • Facial massage techniques

  • Mechanical and electrical facials
  • Microdermabrasion
  • And more!

You’ll also have the opportunity to learn skills in business and marketing that you can carry with you throughout your career.

What Are The Differences Between Cosmetology And Esthetics?

Cosmetology is considered to be a more broad field, while esthetics is considered to be more specialized. Whether you choose to get licensed in cosmetology or esthetics, both will allow you to work in the beauty industry. Typically, you can find cosmetologists working in a salon and estheticians working in a spa.

Which Is The Best Choice For You?

Both cosmetology and esthetics are great programs to kickstart your beauty career. No matter which program you choose, we are confident you can find success. While we can’t tell you which program to enroll in, we can offer tips to help make the decision easier! If you are trying to decide between cosmetology and esthetics, these are some questions you can ask yourself:

  • What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
  • What are your personal interests?
  • Which skills do I want to hone in on and advance throughout my career?

Both cosmetologists and estheticians spend a lot of time one-on-one with clients. So if you’re a people person, either option could be a great fit for you! You’ll have the opportunity to meet lots of people throughout your career! Both professions also get the chance to improve their clients’ lives, one beauty service at a time! There is no greater feeling than knowing you are helping someone gain confidence in their appearance!
